“Electrocatalysis for sustainable energy and chemicals”

The talk will discuss a few topics in electrocatalysis as it relates to the storage of renewable energy and the sustainable production of “electrochemicals”. Our work primarily focuses on understanding fundamental mechanistic aspects of electrocatalytic hydrogen production (from different water sources), electrochemical CO2 reduction, and the selective electrochemical upgrading of biomass-derived platform molecules.

Prof. Dr. Marc Koper studied Chemistry at Utrecht University and obtained his PhD ‘cum laude’ in 1994 at the same university. Since 2005 he is a full professor in fundamental surface science at Leiden University.

His interests are in electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, (electrochemical) surface science, and theoretical and computational (electro-)chemistry. In particular, his research focuses on how to steer and catalyze redox reactions of carbon, oxygen and nitrogen for sustainable energy and chemistry combining experiment, theory and catalyst design principles.
