Abstract

Jaap Dijt studied Molecular Sciences at Wageningen Agricultural University, and obtained his PhD in 1993 at that same university in the field of Physical and Colloid Chemistry. Since then he has worked for over 25 years in Research of the NEG (till 2017 PPG) fiber glass production plant in Hoogezand, close to Groningen city.

In his lecture Jaap Dijt will talk about work in industrial R&D, and how a combination of a scientific and practical approach can result in innovations and new products that are produced on mass-scale day in day out. He will also show how sand and clay are molten in large furnaces, and formed into fiber glass, that is used to reinforce thermoset and thermoplastic polymers. The chemistry of the glass / polymer interface is key to high strength of the composite materials used in cars, wind mills, household appliances and many other.
